On October 25, 1999, a private Learjet 35 (registration N47BA) took off from Orlando, Florida, bound for Dallas, Texas and then vanished from radio contact. For nearly four hours, the aircraft flew on autopilot across the U.S. while all six people on board were incapacitated by hypoxia after a loss of cabin pressure. When it finally ran out of fuel, it crashed in a field near Mina, South Dakota, leaving no survivors.
This is the story of one of aviation’s most chilling “ghost flights,” and the mystery that still surrounds why the cabin depressurized in the first place.
A routine trip turns into a national emergency
The flight began normally. At around 9:19 a.m. EDT, the Learjet departed Orlando International Airport with two pilots and four passengers, including U.S. Open golf champion Payne Stewart. The passenger list also featured Robert Fraley (a former Alabama quarterback and Stewart’s agent), Van Ardan (president of Stewart’s golf agency), and Bruce Borland, a golf course architect linked to Jack Nicklaus’s firm.
As the jet climbed toward its assigned cruising altitude of 39,000 feet (about 11,900 meters), the crew made their last routine radio call around 37,000 feet, reporting everything normal. Minutes later, air traffic control could no longer reach them. Repeated calls went unanswered, triggering escalating concern and, eventually, military interception.

F-16 intercepts: frosted windows and no response
U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard jets were scrambled to intercept the unresponsive aircraft. Pilots reported that the Learjet’s windshields appeared frosted or covered with condensation, consistent with extreme cold at high altitude and a sign the cabin environment was abnormal. They could not see inside the cockpit to confirm the crew’s condition.
The jet continued northwest, far off its planned route to Dallas, drifting deep into the continental U.S. There were later reports and speculation about whether authorities considered shooting it down if it approached populated areas; official U.S. statements denied that was ever a real option, though Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien later wrote that Canada had authorized a shoot-down if the jet entered its airspace near Winnipeg.
The final minutes: fuel exhaustion and a supersonic impact
The Learjet had enough fuel for roughly four and a half hours. After about 3 hours and 54 minutes in the air, the engines spooled down as the tanks ran dry. Without thrust, the autopilot tried to maintain altitude, airspeed decayed, the aircraft stalled, and it entered a severe spiral descent.
Witnesses described an uncontrolled, near–supersonic plunge into a flat field near Mina, South Dakota. The impact destroyed the aircraft and left a large crater; miraculously, no one on the ground was injured.
What happened to the people on board?
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded that the probable cause was crew incapacitation due to hypoxia following a loss of cabin pressurization for undetermined reasons. In simpler terms: the cabin lost pressure, oxygen levels dropped, and everyone on board lost consciousness quickly and silently.
Both gradual and rapid decompression can cause cognitive impairment and blackout as available oxygen falls. In this case, the evidence suggests the pilots were unable to get supplemental oxygen in time, and the autopilot kept the plane flying until fuel exhaustion.
Why did the cabin lose pressure? The mystery remains
Despite extensive investigation, the exact trigger for the depressurization was never definitively identified. The NTSB’s final determination explicitly states the cause of the pressure loss is “undetermined.”
Some reporting highlighted prior maintenance notes on the same aircraft (N47BA) referencing pressurization discrepancies, but these did not lead to a conclusive mechanical explanation in the official findings. To this day, the precise failure mode—whether a valve, seal, or other component—remains unknown.
Legacy: a memorial in South Dakota and a golf legend remembered
A memorial marker now stands near the crash site in South Dakota, honoring the six victims of the accident. Payne Stewart, remembered as one of golf’s greats, was later inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
The 1999 “ghost flight” endures as a sobering case study in aviation safety, underscoring how quickly hypoxia can incapacitate a crew and why pressurization and oxygen systems are critical.
